Smartphones can check e-mail, record videos and even stream NPR. Now NASA has discovered they make pretty decent satellites, too. Three smart phones launched into space this past Sunday are orbiting above us even now, transmitting data and images back to Earth. The PhoneSats, which cost just a few thousand dollars each, could usher in big changes for the satellite industry.

The PhoneSats started as a project among young engineers working at the NASA Ames Research Center in California. Jim Cockrell, the project’s manager, says it began as a hallway conversation. One noted that smartphone microprocessors are cheaper than those in satellites. So why not just use a smartphone as a satellite?

“It was sort of a whimsical notion,” Cockrell says. But it also made sense. Modern satellites are used for communication and navigation, and so are smartphones. And the phones have things that satellites have, too, like accelerometers, gyroscopes and cameras. Continue reading…

The Japanese company RED sued Sony last month for patent infringement. Sony is answering back by filing a lawsuit for seven separate instances of alleged patent infringement by RED. The patents all involve new cameras the companies have produced.

Just as the NAB 2013 video and media show gets underway in Las Vegas, Sony has announced that it is suing RED for patent infringement. The Japanese giant is seeking damages and a sales injunction against products including the RED One, Epic and Scarlet professional video cameras, along with other accessories and modules. Sony claims that RED has violated seven patents in total.

The case comes in response to a lawsuit that RED brought against Sony last month, which alleged “willful and wanton” patent infringement with products such as the F65, F55, and F5 cameras. Patent Office Lowers Standards

The head of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office announced his resignation last year. His last push was to improve the backlog of applications before he left. A study is revealing, however, that instead of the improvement in the backlog come from hiring new employees, it was the result of lowering the standards for patents.

When David Kappos announced his resignation as head of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) late last year, one of his most touted accomplishments was a significant reduction in the backlog of pending patent applications. Kappos’s fans have attributed this to the hiring of hundreds of additional patent examiners.

But a new study suggests another explanation for the declining backlog: the patent office may have lowered its standards, approving many patents that would have been (and in some cases, had been) rejected under the administration of George W. Bush. The authors—Chris Cotropia and Cecil Quillen of the University of Richmond and independent researcher Ogden Webster—used Freedom of Information Act requests to obtain detailed data about the fate of patent applications considered by the USPTO since 1996. Unified Patents Inc. To Protect Against Trolls

Companies that buy patents merely to make money off of enforcing them often target small companies who can’t afford the cost of litigation. A new company has been created to combat this type of behavior. It is called Unified Patents Inc., and it will band small companies together to make them less vulnerable.

“What we end up doing is making a group of small companies no longer look like an easy target,” said Kevin Jakel, Unified’s chief executive.

Unified’s plan is one of many responses to the rise of companies that specialize in making money from patents, often while doing little in the way of invention or selling products. That distinction is important because such companies—often called NPEs, for “nonpracticing entities,” or, more derisively, “patent trolls”—don’t operate businesses that can be countersued, a common patent defense.

PatentFreedom, an organization that tracks such firms, said the number of operating companies named in lawsuits involving NPEs more than tripled between 2008 and 2012, even after adjusting to exclude a recent surge in suits caused by a change in U.S. patent laws. Continue reading…

Patent Troll Sues Mobile Game Makers

Despite Apple’s efforts to keep it from happening, a patent troll has sued 10 different mobile game makers for patent infringement. Lodys is the patent troll that would not accept Apple’s response that, because Apple had licensed the apps, the games should be covered as a result. Lodys wants a cut of the game sales as well as royalties.

Lodsys got attention back in 2011 when it went after small app developers, demanding about one half-percent (.0575 percent, to be exact) of their revenue if they use in-app purchases. By May of that year, Apple intervened in the legal action, arguing that since it had already licensed the Lodsys patents, developers should be protected.

Apple’s intervention has hardly been a quick fix, though. Its argument has been taking a mighty long time to get consideration in the East Texas court where it’s fighting. And there’s nothing to stop Lodsys from filing patent lawsuits against new targets—which is exactly what it’s been doing. And Lodsys also believes its patents entitle it to royalties from websites that use certain types of “interactive chat, user feedback form, and survey features,” enabling it to sue practically any company with a website. The mixture of mouse and human cells was transplanted into adult mouse kidneys and grew into recognisable tooth structures coated in enamel with viable developing roots, according to a study published in the Journal Of Dental Research.

Dentists examined more than 700 hurting patients to pinpoint the root of their pain, and found that 1 in 8 were suffering from tooth sensitivity. A 23 year-old woman in Missouri is being charged with sexually abusing a 15 year-old girl.  The two had been living in the same apartment for three months when police were called to investigate an assault and discovered the abuse.  The woman faces up to 7 years in prison.

Amber D. Rodgers is facing a felony count of second-degree statutory sodomy for sexual acts police say were committed during a three-month period that ended when police who were investigating an assault say they learned of the abuse. Rodgers remained incarcerated at the Cape Girardeau County Jail on $20,000 bond. The charge carries possible punishment of up to seven years in prison. The bond carries a condition that Rodgers must have no contact with the alleged victim.

Rodgers also was charged with misdemeanor assault, which is what brought officers Darrin Sides and Jaclyn Kelly to an apartment in Cape Girardeau on Monday shortly before midnight. Police came to believe that Rodgers was sexually abusing the minor while they investigated a report Rodgers had hit a woman at the West End Boulevard apartment, according to a probable-cause statement on file with the court. The assault victim said Rodgers had punched her during an argument, and police noted the assault victim’s face was bruised and swelling.

The assault victim later said she and Rodgers were arguing because the victim had confronted Rodgers for “sleeping with” the juvenile, the statement said.

Rodgers denied the allegations involving the girl, the statement said. But police noticed that, as they interviewed the 15-year-old, Rodgers was “consistently concerned” about her and often tried to comfort her, according to the statement. Rodgers “kept a close eye on” the girl while she talked with police and “generally did not want to leave her alone” with them, the report said.  Continue reading…

Chapter 7 Bankruptcy Down, But Chapter 13 Up in Connecticut

Chapter 7 Bankruptcy filings are down 15% in Connecticut, but Chapter 13 filings are up by 9%.  These two types of personal bankruptcy take different approaches to returning a person to financial solvency.  Analysts say this is a positive sign because Chapter 7 liquidates all of a person’s assets and sells them off, but Chapter 13 gives a person 3 to 5 years to repay debtors.

The report by the Boston-based Warren Group found that Chapter 7 personal bankruptcy filings in the state went from 8,518 in 2011 to 7,242 in 2012. Chapter 7 filings are the most common type of personal bankruptcy filings, having accounted for 86 percent of all bankruptcy filings in the state in 2012.

But another type of personal bankruptcy filings, Chapter 13, increased in Connecticut from 934 in 2011 to 1,022 in 2012.

A Chapter 7 filing is what is known as a straight or liquidation personal bankruptcy in which all but a small amount of an individual’s personal property is turned over to a trustee to be sold off in an attempt to pay off creditors.

A Chapter 13 personal bankruptcy is one in which an individual is protected from creditors while a plan is developed to pay of debts over three to five years.

“The drop in bankruptcy filings is an encouraging sign; it indicates that consumers are more optimistic about their ability to pay off debt and clean up their financial situations,” Timothy M. Warren Jr., the chief executive officer of The Warren Group, said in a statement.  Continue reading…
